Why temperature is not just another linear factor#
Length and weight conversions are all a simple multiplication against a base unit — 1 inch is always exactly 2.54cm, no matter the value. Temperature is different: Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin do not share a zero point, so converting requires an offset as well as a scale. This tool uses the real formulas (°F = °C × 9/5 + 32, K = °C + 273.15) rather than treating temperature like a length unit with a different multiplier, which would silently produce wrong answers.
Where the conversion factors come from#
Length and weight use the internationally defined exact conversion factors — 1 inch = 2.54cm exactly, 1 pound = 453.59237 grams exactly, both fixed by international agreement, not approximated. There is no rounding error accumulating across a chain of conversions, because each conversion goes through the metric base unit (meters or grams) rather than converting directly between every possible pair.
