Why one paste beats five separate counters#
Social managers and SEOs rarely publish to a single network. The same launch blurb becomes an Instagram caption, a LinkedIn post, a Threads update, a TikTok caption and a YouTube description — often within the same hour. Opening a different character counter for each field wastes time and invites silent mistakes: a LinkedIn headline that looked fine in a generic counter still fails the 220-character profile limit, or a YouTube title that “fits” at 110 characters never saves.
A social media character counter that is built as a multi-platform dashboard solves that workflow. You paste once. Every card updates together. You see immediately which surface is the bottleneck — usually Instagram bio (150), Threads post (500), Bluesky (300), LinkedIn headline (220) or YouTube title (100) — and you rewrite toward the strictest field you actually need, instead of discovering the cut after scheduling.
That is different from a specialist X / Twitter tool. X still needs weighted length: every link costs 23 characters via t.co, and CJK characters cost two. This page intentionally shows a plain Twitter character count for side-by-side comparison, and points you to the dedicated X Character Counter when the composer’s real algorithm matters.
Hard limits vs the “see more” fold#
Hard limits are the ceilings platforms enforce in the composer or API: Instagram caption character count limit at 2,200, TikTok caption character limit commonly cited at 2,200 for video captions, LinkedIn post character count at 3,000, Facebook post character limit around 63,206, Threads character limit at 500, YouTube description character limit at 5,000. Cross those and you cannot publish (or the API rejects the payload).
Soft / preview limits are different. Facebook often collapses long posts behind “See more” after roughly 125–150 characters in feed — the exact fold moves with device, media and UI experiments. This tool includes a clearly labeled soft row for that preview so you can front-load the hook without confusing it with Facebook’s huge hard cap. Instagram and LinkedIn also truncate in feed; treat those folds as editorial guidance even when this dashboard highlights Facebook’s preview explicitly.
Bios and titles are easy to forget because they are not “posts.” Instagram character count for bio is 150. Threads bio character limit is also 150. LinkedIn headline character count is 220. YouTube title character limit is 100 (and search cards often show less). A YouTube title character limit checker on the same canvas as captions prevents the classic “copy-paste the LinkedIn lede into the title field” failure.
How SEOs and social teams should use the bars#
Green means comfortable headroom. Amber means you are at or above 90% of the field limit — finish the thought carefully. Red means over: for hard rows, trim before publish; for the soft Facebook preview row, red only means the fold is behind you, not that posting is blocked.
When syndicating, write for the strictest hard limit in your distribution set, then expand where the network allows. Example: a 280-character core works on X (plain) and still leaves room on Threads (500) and Bluesky (300 is tighter — watch that card). Expand the long-form story only in LinkedIn posts or YouTube descriptions after the shared hook is locked.
Limits change. Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok and others adjust composers and APIs. Treat the numbers here as widely cited 2025/2026 references, re-check before a high-stakes campaign, and keep drafts local — counting runs entirely in your browser with nothing uploaded.
