Why Instagram needs a trick like this at all#
Instagram's bio, display name and caption fields accept plain text only — there is no bold button, no italic toggle, nothing. The only way to get a bio line that visually stands out is exactly this trick: swapping regular letters for Unicode characters that already look bold, italic or otherwise stylized before Instagram ever touches them. Instagram is not doing anything special to render it — it is just displaying the text you pasted, the same as it would display any other character.
What to expect across the Instagram app and web#
Instagram's mobile app and its web version generally render the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols styles (bold, italic, sans-serif, monospace) reliably, since the underlying OS font on most modern phones covers that block. The bubble-letter style is a bit more device-dependent. If a style looks broken for someone viewing your profile, it is a font-coverage issue on their specific device, not something wrong with the text itself — the same limitation explained in more detail on the [Fancy Text Generator](/tools/fancy-text-generator) page.
